Electrokinetic motion of polarizable particles

چکیده
! r U = r f ( r E ) . In electrolytes, such effects of induced-charge electrophoresis (ICEP) occur in addition to the purely electrostatic effect of dielectrophoresis (DEP) in low-frequency AC fields (< 100 kHz), where there is enough time for diffuse-charge relaxation around the particle within each period. ICEP is a complex phenomenon, which can lead not only to nonlinear mobility (in the field direction) but also to rotation and motion in arbitrary directions, even in uniform fields.

1. The effect of human and rabbit sera on the cataphoretic mobility of glass and quartz particles, and of paraffin oil droplets, was studied in serum dilutions (with 0.85 per cent NaCl) from 1:50 to 1:1,000,000, over a pH range of 3.6 to 9.3. 2. Under the conditions described, these various types of particles adsorbed protein partially or completely from the most dilute solution giving these pa...
متن کاملElectrodiffusiophoresis: Particle motion in electrolytes under direct current
Colloidal particles in electrolytes move in response to electric fields !electrophoresis" and salt concentration gradients !diffusiophoresis", and related flows also occur at fixed surfaces !electro-osmosis and diffusio-osmosis, respectively". In isolation, these electrokinetic phenomena are well understood, e.g., electrophoresis without far-field concentration gradients and diffusiophoresis wi...
متن کاملDipolophoresis in large-scale suspensions of ideally polarizable spheres
The nonlinear dynamics of uncharged ideally polarizable spheres freely suspended in a viscous electrolyte in a uniform electric field are analysed using theory and numerical simulations. When a sphere polarizes under the action of the field, it acquires a non-uniform surface charge, which results in an electro-osmotic flow near its surface that scales quadratically with the applied field magnit...
متن کاملAssessment of Sub-Micron Particles by Exploiting Charge Differences with Dielectrophoresis
The analysis, separation, and enrichment of submicron particles are critical steps in many applications, ranging from bio-sensing to disease diagnostics. Microfluidic electrokinetic techniques, such as dielectrophoresis (DEP) have proved to be excellent platforms for assessment of submicron particles. DEP is the motion of polarizable particles under the presence of a non-uniform electric field....
متن کاملdc electrokinetic transport of cylindrical cells in straight microchannels.
Electrokinetic transport of cylindrical cells under dc electric fields in a straight microfluidic channel is experimentally and numerically investigated with emphasis on the dielectrophoretic (DEP) effect on their orientation variations. A two-dimensional multiphysics model, composed of the Navier-Stokes equations for the fluid flow and the Laplace equation for the electric potential defined in...
